Between episodes, colonoscopy is safe, important, and recommended to assess the extent of disease and exclude coexisting polyps or cancer.

NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac, aspirin in anti-inflammatory doses), corticosteroids (prednisolone, dexamethasone), and opioid analgesics are all associated with a higher risk of diverticular perforation and complicated episodes. If you have known diverticular disease, discuss pain management alternatives with your surgeon. Paracetamol is the safest first-line option.

You cannot reliably self-diagnose diverticulitis. Left lower abdominal pain with fever can also indicate ovarian pathology, kidney stones, urinary tract infection, or inflammatory bowel disease. Right-sided diverticulitis mimics appendicitis. A CT scan is the only reliable way to confirm the diagnosis.
